REALISTIC PAINTING: WATERCOLOR OR OIL

Learn to paint in a realistic manner, working in oil or watercolor media. Work from slides, photographs, or magazine photos to develop your painting skills and further self-expression. This is a safe class in which to learn; there are no mistakes in the learning process! The first class will include a discussion, demonstration and a list of supplies for the remaining classes. Bring simple photos you may want to paint. All levels are welcome.

BROKEN PLATE MOSAIC

Learn the basic art of broken plate mosaics, or "Pique Assiette," by completing either a stepping stone or garden/address plaque in one afternoon. No previous experience is needed. A demonstration at the beginning of class will familiarize you with the use of tile nippers, applying adhesives and the grouting technique. You will have a large, colorful selection of plates, tiles and ceramic pieces to complete your project. Come enjoy yourself in the Painted Chair Studio/Garden while learning this wonderfully creative art form!. A $5 materials fee is payable at the first class. Nancy's work has been featured in a number of local galleries. She is an Open Studios artist, and her artwork has been shown in San Francisco, Monterey, Salinas, and the San Jose Museum of Art.

In this entry-level class you will have the opportunity to make a Table Top Bird Bath, which incorporates both a flat and curved surface. Your alternate choice of projects may be a stepping stone, flower pot, or an outdoor mirror or plaque. You may also bring your own small project; simply contact the instructor prior to the class date. At the start of class you will recieve instruction and demonstration on the use of tile nippers, adhesives and grout. You will choose from a large selection of ceramic plates and tiles to complete your project in the welcoming Painted Chair Studio/Garden. A $15 materials fee is payable to Nancy at the class.

Glass Tile Mosaics lends itself to both the novice and experienced artist or crafter. You will have a large selection of colored glass tiles, along with stained glass and beautiful glass pieces to create a plaque suitable for indoor or outdoor use. You may bring a design or choose from many ideas available in class. You will receive instruction in the use of glass wheel nippers and glass cutting tools along with the use of adhesives and grouting techiniques for glass. Come enjoy an afternoon of art at the Painted Chair Studio! A $15 materials fee is payable at the first class.

In this one-day hands-on workshop you will first enjoy a demonstration that includes a variety of folk-art style finishes. You will then create a sample board and spend the afternoon painting furniture! Bring to class: a small piece of furniture and a light lunch. The class includes a morning demonstration, all paints and supplies, written instructions, sample boards and afternoon snacks. A $20 materials fee is payable at the first class.

MAKE A CERAMIC PLATTER / WALL SCULPTURE

Learn how to use hand-building techniques to make your own unique textured, food-safe platter or wall-mounted sculpture. In the first class, we will make a plate shape from soft wet clay that you will be able to embellish with stamps and other textures. Once dry, these will be fired for 8 hours in a kiln. In the second class, we will paint stains and glazes to add the elements of color and a satin or glossy finish. After a second 7-hour firing, your finished pieces will be ready to pick up. A $20 materials fee is payable at the first class.

If you have always wanted to learn to use the potter’s wheel, then this class is the class for you! Beginners will receive centering and glazing instruction, with positive feedback, each class. Those who already have basic throwing skills will learn to throw taller and more consistently, and will develop more intermediate skills. The instructor will guide you through projects of your choosing, including handbuilding, in a safe, supportive environment. Open pracitce times are available; just call John or stop by the studio.

Join internationally-recognized jewelry designer and teacher Rachel Nelson-Smith and make beautiful beaded gifts and jewelry. Rachel has been teaching people to make extraordinary jewelry since 1998 through bead stores, city parks and recreation programs, art schools, privately, and at national bead shows. Learn stringing with flexible beading wire as well as jewelry-making terms, and walk away with at least 2 pieces of jewelry and the knowledge and confidence to make more. After learning this essential jewelry-making technique of loop-making, you will walk away from class with at least two pairs of sparkling earrings and a 20-gauge wire bead chain - the beginnings of working with wire.
